The Movie:

Miles of twisting catacombs lie beneath the streets of Paris, the eternal home to countless souls. When a team of explorers ventures into the uncharted maze of bones, they uncover the dark secret that lies within this city of the dead. A journey into madness and terror, As Above, So Below reaches deep into the human psyche to reveal the personal demons that come back to haunt us all.

I do not hide my feelings on the found footage genre and how I grow tired of it so you can imagine my excitement when I popped this in and I see a first person view of things. I decided (like every other found footage film I’ve seen) that I would give this a chance and see how it all plays out. First thing that I noticed within the first twenty minutes was that it’s actually not as nauseating as some found footage films can be which is already a big win in my book. It’s filmed handheld but still has a cinematic feel to it that sets it apart from the usual stuff we’ve seen in the past. One of the things that I liked was that the story unfolded in a way that didn’t give too many details and kept me wondering what in the hell was going on. As the film progressed it grabbed my attention when it turned out they couldn’t escape the catacombs and kept going in circles. It wasn’t shocking really but it was done in a way that made me want to watch the rest to see how/if they were going to get out of their situation. Once you get into the third act of the film it starts to makes more and more sense as what is going on but the moment that I thought was the most unique was the very end. I haven’t seen anything like it before so the film definitely gets points for that. This was A LOT more entertaining than I thought it was going to be and although it wasn’t a completely terrifying kind of film it did have me a liiiiiittle bit claustrophobic. This is worth checking out…….in complete darkness.  7/10
