Adventures In Zambezia: Blu-ray Review
Kai is a naïve, but high-spirited young falcon who travels to the bird city of “Zambezia” where he discovers the truth about his origins and, in defending the city, learns how to be part of a community.
As an adult I can appreciate a good kid movie and seeing as I’m a father to two kiddos I’ve seen A LOT of them. Right away I saw the list of the voice cast and I wondered how I haven’t heard of this one before. With the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Jeff Goldblum, Leonard Nimoy and Abigail Breslin this film definitely has the star power behind it but just doesn’t deliver completely. Movies like this are very tricky to get right. You can have a beautiful looking CG animated and if the voice acting is horrible then it just doesn’t work. This film had it the other way around. The voice acting was probably the best part and I feel saved the movie. The animation however wasn’t up to par in my opinion. It wasn’t the worst in the world but it was just messy to me. There were moments where you could see sharp polygons on some of the birds like it wasn’t completely finished but the thing that did look nice were the backgrounds and scenery. They were very rich in color and looked somewhat realistic. One major thing that I took into consideration was that this film wasn’t meant for me. I’m not its target demographic so I decided to watch it a second time with my son. I watched his reactions to certain scenes and the conclusion was that he absolutely loved it. He loved that there were many different types of animals and the music had him dancing in his seat. For the most part he just couldn’t take his eyes off the screen and that made me realize that if this movie has him pulled in then it’s done its job. It’s very easy to get caught up in technicalities when in actuality all that matters is if the kiddos dig it.
